At least 35 people have been killed and 24 others are missing in northern Vietnam after Typhoon Yagi unleashed severe landslides and floods, the disaster management agency announced on Monday.
The mountainous province of Lao Cai bore the brunt of the disaster, with 13 people killed in landslides and one in a flash flood. Quang Ninh province, which lay directly in the typhoon’s path, reported six deaths, according to the agency’s report.
Typhoon Yagi made landfall on Saturday on Vietnam’s northeastern coast, an area that hosts significant manufacturing operations for both domestic and foreign companies. By Sunday, the meteorological agency had downgraded Yagi to a tropical depression.
