Heavy Monsoon Floods Kill 33 in Southern India, Displace Thousands

Heavy monsoon rains and flooding have wreaked havoc in southern India, claiming at least 33 lives over the past two days. In neighboring Pakistan, five children have also lost their lives due to the torrential downpours, authorities reported on Tuesday.

The states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana have been severely affected, with houses collapsing and being swept away by floodwaters. Transportation has been disrupted as floods have impacted road and rail traffic across the region. Telangana’s top bureaucrat, Shanta Kumari, announced that the weather service has issued a red alert for 11 districts, predicting more rain in the coming days.

“More than 4,000 people have been moved to 110 government-run relief camps in Telangana since Monday,” stated the state’s chief minister, A. Revanth Reddy. Overflowing lakes, tanks, and streams have cut off several villages in the Mahabubnagar and Nalgonda districts, exacerbating the crisis.
