Floods and Landslides in the Philippines Kill 10 as Tropical Storm Yagi Approaches

At least 10 people have lost their lives due to floods and landslides triggered by tropical storm Yagi in the Philippines, authorities reported on Monday. The storm has also left at least one person missing as it continues to impact the region.

Tropical storm Yagi, expected to make landfall on Monday afternoon or evening in the northern Philippines, has already unleashed heavy rainfall across most of Luzon Island, including the densely populated Metro Manila area. The relentless downpour has caused rivers to swell and low-lying areas to flood, disrupting daily life and prompting emergency responses.

The fatalities include six individuals from Antipolo City, east of Manila, where landslides devastated hillside communities. Two deaths were reported in Cebu City in the central Philippines due to drowning incidents, while another two occurred in Naga City, southeast of Manila, as a result of separate landslides. Rescue teams are continuing search and recovery operations, with at least one person still unaccounted for.

Local authorities have urged residents in vulnerable areas to evacuate and stay alert for further updates as the storm approaches landfall. “We are closely monitoring the situation and have mobilized emergency services to assist affected communities,” a government official stated.

The Philippines, an archipelago prone to natural disasters, regularly faces typhoons and tropical storms that cause significant damage and loss of life. The impact of tropical storm Yagi highlights the ongoing challenges the country faces in disaster preparedness and climate resilience.

As the nation braces for the storm’s landfall, communities are coming together to support those affected, exemplifying the resilience and unity of the Filipino people in the face of adversity.
