As Typhoon Shanshan edges closer to the Japanese coastline, nine individuals have been injured in Miyazaki and Kagoshima prefectures, prompting widespread concern and significant disruptions.
By Wednesday noon, the 10th typhoon of the year was positioned 90 kilometers south-southwest of Yakushima Island in Kagoshima prefecture, gradually advancing northward. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) issued emergency warnings for severe storms and high waves in Kagoshima, urging residents to maintain the highest level of vigilance.
Evacuation orders have been issued for over 800,000 residents across Kagoshima prefecture in Kyushu, as well as in the central Aichi and Shizuoka prefectures. Local authorities are working tirelessly to ensure the safety of those in the typhoon’s projected path.
In response to the impending storm, Japanese automotive giant Toyota announced the suspension of operations at all 14 of its plants nationwide from Wednesday evening through Thursday morning. The decision underscores the serious nature of the typhoon’s threat to infrastructure and employee safety.
Transportation services are also experiencing significant impacts. Airlines and rail operators have canceled numerous services over the coming days as Typhoon Shanshan, classified as “very strong,” brings sustained winds of 50 meters per second and gusts up to 70 meters per second (252 km/h or 157 mph).
As residents brace for the typhoon’s landfall, emergency services and local governments are coordinating efforts to mitigate damage and ensure public safety. The situation remains fluid, with updates expected as the typhoon moves closer to the mainland.
