Heavy Rain in South China Displaces 86,000 and Disrupts Transportation

In the wake of relentless downpours on Wednesday, over 86,000 residents in south China’s Guangdong Province were relocated as a precautionary measure against heavy floods. The torrential rains not only displaced thousands but also brought significant disruptions to transportation across the region.

Throughout the day, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., 65 townships and sub-districts in Guangdong were battered by heavy rains exceeding 100 millimeters. The city of Dongguan bore the brunt of the storm, with one sub-district recording a staggering 247.9 millimeters of rainfall, according to local meteorological and hydrological reports.

The impact on infrastructure was immediate. By 11 a.m., railway services on crucial lines connecting Guangzhou with Shenzhen and Guangzhou with Shantou were suspended, stranding numerous passengers. At Guangzhou Baiyun Airport, 55 flights faced delays exceeding an hour as of 8:38 p.m., causing disruptions for travelers.

Residents in affected areas faced challenging conditions, with waterlogged streets and disrupted daily routines. Emergency services were on high alert, assisting in evacuations and providing support to those impacted by the floods.

Relief, however, may be on the horizon. The Guangdong meteorological observatory forecasts a weakening in the intensity of the rainfall between Thursday and Friday, offering hope for recovery efforts to commence.
