A recent study from the second Qinghai-Xizang Plateau scientific expedition has revealed that the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau ecosystem absorbs an estimated 120 to 140 million tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) annually. This absorption contributes 10 to 16 percent of China’s total ecosystem carbon sink, highlighting the plateau’s crucial role in carbon capture.
Despite emitting 55 million tonnes of CO2 per year, the plateau maintains a carbon surplus of over 65 million tonnes, according to Yao Tandong, an academician with the Chinese Academy of Sciences and leader of the scientific research survey. He announced the findings at a press conference in Lhasa on Sunday.
