Thousands of residents in northeastern Athens and the wider Attica region stayed up late on Monday night for the second consecutive evening as a massive, rapidly spreading wildfire threatened the nation’s capital.
The fire, fueled by strong winds and dry conditions, has spread swiftly and is still raging on multiple fronts. Despite a significant firefighting effort involving over 700 firefighters, military personnel, volunteers, and 35 water-dropping aircraft and helicopters, the blaze remains uncontrolled, according to a Fire Brigade spokesperson.
“The situation improved by Monday night in several other areas,” he added, offering a glimmer of hope amid the ongoing crisis.
The wildfire has resulted in at least 35 injuries, further highlighting the urgent need to contain the flames. The combination of high temperatures, dry vegetation, and gusty winds has created perfect conditions for the fire to spread, posing a serious threat to communities on the outskirts of Athens.
Authorities have urged residents in threatened areas to remain vigilant and follow evacuation orders if necessary. Emergency services continue to work tirelessly to protect lives and property as the situation unfolds.
