Chongqing Issues Red Alert as Temperatures Soar Above 40°C

Chongqing Municipality in southwest China has issued a red alert for high temperatures, the highest level in the country’s alert system, as temperatures are expected to surpass 40 degrees Celsius.

According to the Chongqing Meteorological Service, thirty districts and counties are forecasted to experience scorching heat exceeding 40°C between 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Thursday. The meteorological department has advised residents in these areas to guard against fires and reduce outdoor activities to minimize heat-related health risks.

Chongqing has been enduring a heat wave since earlier this week, with orange alerts—the second-highest level for high temperatures—issued for Tuesday and Wednesday. The escalation to a red alert signifies the severe nature of the current heat conditions.

In China’s three-tier high-temperature alert system, a red alert is triggered when temperatures are forecasted to exceed 40°C within 24 hours, followed by orange and yellow alerts for less extreme conditions.

Often dubbed the “furnace city”, Chongqing is renowned for its sweltering summers, where high humidity and soaring temperatures are common. The current heat wave emphasizes the need for preparedness and caution among residents and visitors alike.
