Southern Xinjiang Unveils First High-Altitude Wind Farm on Pamir Plateau

Southern Xinjiang celebrated a significant milestone on Saturday as its first wind power project commenced operations on the Pamir Plateau in Wuqia County. Situated at an average altitude of 3,100 meters in the Kizilsu Kirgiz Autonomous Prefecture, this wind farm not only marks the westernmost of its kind in China but also represents a breakthrough in high-altitude wind energy technology.

The initial phase of the project involves 20 wind turbines, collectively expected to generate approximately 270 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually. This substantial output will provide clean, renewable energy to the region, contributing to sustainable development and reducing reliance on traditional fossil fuels.

“The successful operation of this wind farm at such high altitudes offers invaluable experience for future projects in similar terrains,” commented a project spokesperson. “It demonstrates the feasibility of harnessing wind energy in areas with low wind speeds and challenging environmental conditions.”

Upon completion, the wind farm will encompass 38 turbines with a total installed capacity of 200,000 kilowatts. This expansion is anticipated to further bolster the region’s energy infrastructure and support local economic growth.

The Pamir Plateau, often referred to as the “Roof of the World,” presents unique opportunities and challenges for renewable energy projects. The wind farm’s development underscores China’s commitment to exploring innovative solutions in clean energy and mitigating the impacts of climate change.
