In the bustling port city of Qinzhou, nestled in south China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, a remarkable story of harmony between progress and nature is unfolding. Despite its strategic position connecting China with ASEAN countries, Qinzhou’s port development has faced unique challenges.
The serene waters off Qinzhou are home to the Chinese white dolphins, a rare and protected marine species. In 2005, recognizing the importance of preserving this precious habitat, authorities made the bold decision to adjust the planning of Qinzhou Port. The port was moved westward, further from the dolphins' home, even though this significantly increased construction costs.
Four years later, a new road was constructed, serving as a boundary separating the port's industrial zone from the dolphins' conservation area. This deliberate measure ensured that industrial activities would not encroach upon the delicate marine ecosystem.
In a further commitment to conservation, a major project near Sanniang Bay, with an investment of 3.8 billion yuan (about $532.6 million), was halted. The decision reflected a prioritization of ecological preservation over rapid economic development, safeguarding the dolphins' sanctuary.
