China has activated a Level-IV emergency response as heavy rains batter the northeastern province of Heilongjiang, raising concerns over potential floods and geological disasters.
On Wednesday, the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters announced the emergency response, anticipating heavy to torrential rains in parts of Heilongjiang in the coming days. The Ministry of Emergency Management warned that the weather conditions increase the overall risk of floods and geological hazards in the region.
The ministry also initiated a Level-IV emergency response for geological disasters in Chongqing, a municipality in southwest China, on the same day.
Between Monday and Tuesday, national comprehensive firefighting and rescue teams were dispatched to 152 flood control and rescue operations across the country, successfully rescuing and evacuating 2,837 people.
China’s emergency response system for flood control comprises four levels, with Level I being the most severe. The current Level-IV response indicates a significant but manageable risk, prompting coordinated efforts among local authorities to mitigate potential damage.
The government is urging residents in affected areas to stay alert and follow safety guidelines as weather conditions evolve.
