In a significant development for China's environmental landscape, Qinghai Lake—the country's largest inland saltwater lake—has witnessed a substantial rise in its water level in 2023. The annual average water level has climbed to 3196.6 meters, marking an increase of 1.3 meters compared to the average over the past decade.
This notable change was detailed in the “Ecological Meteorological Bulletin of the Qinghai Lake Basin (2023)”, a report jointly released by the Qinghai Provincial Meteorological Bureau and the Qinghai Lake Scenic Area Protection and Utilization Administration. The extensive research drew upon ground meteorological data and satellite remote sensing data to evaluate various ecological factors within the Qinghai Lake basin.
The report offers an in-depth assessment of the basin’s ecological climate, water resources, ice and snow resources, and grassland vegetation for the year 2023. These findings shed light on the dynamic environmental conditions of the region and underscore the importance of continuous monitoring and research.
