Baking July Heatwaves Escalate Global Health and Economic Risks

July has continued the trend of record-breaking temperatures set in June, bringing severe health and economic risks to communities worldwide. The scorching heatwaves are not only setting new temperature records but also intensifying the challenges faced by economies and health systems.

“Extreme heat is increasingly tearing through economies, widening inequalities, undermining the Sustainable Development Goals and killing people,” said UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Thursday.

Across Asia, the relentless heat is impacting millions. Agricultural sectors are struggling with droughts affecting crop yields, while urban areas grapple with increased energy demands for cooling. Health services are stretched thin as heat-related illnesses surge.

Economies are feeling the strain as productivity declines due to unsafe working conditions. Outdoor workers, particularly in construction and agriculture, face heightened risks, leading to work stoppages and economic losses.

The persistent heatwaves also threaten to reverse progress on crucial developmental goals. Vulnerable populations are disproportionately affected, exacerbating existing inequalities.

Communities are urged to take precautionary measures to safeguard health and well-being, as experts warn that such extreme weather events may become more frequent due to climate change.
