Typhoon Gaemi Leaves 3 Dead, 380 Injured in Taiwan Region

Typhoon Gaemi Leaves Trail of Destruction in Taiwan Region

Typhoon Gaemi swept across the Taiwan region, leaving three people dead and injuring 380 others as it headed away from the island on Thursday morning. Despite moving away, the storm’s powerful influence continues to impact multiple areas, with authorities warning residents to remain vigilant.

The typhoon made landfall in eastern Taiwan’s Yilan County around midnight on Thursday. It particularly affected the central and southern parts of the island, unleashing heavy rains that led to severe flooding, uprooted trees, road closures, and widespread power outages.

Meteorological data indicates that from early Tuesday to 5 p.m. on Thursday, certain areas experienced unprecedented rainfall. An area in Kaohsiung City recorded a cumulative rainfall of 1,600 millimeters, while regions in Pingtung County, Chiayi City, Yilan County, and Tainan City also saw rainfall exceeding 1,000 millimeters.

Local authorities have mobilized emergency response teams to assist affected communities. Rescue operations are underway, focusing on evacuating residents from flooded areas and restoring essential services. The Taiwan authorities have urged residents to avoid non-essential travel and to stay informed through official channels.

The impact of Typhoon Gaemi poses significant challenges to the region’s infrastructure and could have economic implications, particularly for the agricultural sector, which has been severely affected by the heavy rains and flooding.

As the typhoon moves away, weather officials predict that while the intensity may decrease, residual effects such as landslides and flooding risks remain. Residents in mountainous and low-lying areas are advised to take necessary precautions.

International aid organizations and neighboring regions are monitoring the situation closely, ready to provide support if needed.
