Türkiye Pledges to Plant Over 500 Million Seeds to Restore Wildfire-Damaged Forests

The Turkish Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry has announced an ambitious plan to rejuvenate the nation’s forests devastated by wildfires. By the end of the year, over 500 million seeds and saplings will be planted across the affected regions, aiming to restore damaged ecosystems and combat deforestation.

Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Ibrahim Yumakli highlighted the critical need for continuous efforts in forest fire prevention and reforestation. “We have witnessed the severe impact of wildfires on our forests over the past years,” Yumakli said. “Our commitment is to heal these wounds by planting over 500 million seeds and saplings annually.”

The initiative comes in response to the increasing frequency of forest fires in Türkiye, which have raised concerns about environmental degradation and loss of biodiversity. The reforestation efforts are expected not only to restore the natural landscapes but also to contribute to the fight against climate change.

To bolster the country’s firefighting capabilities, the ministry has invested in new technology. Eight advanced firefighting helicopters have been purchased, with delivery expected in 2028. This enhancement aims to improve rapid response to future wildfires, minimizing their impact on forests and communities.

Yumakli emphasized that protecting and restoring forests is a national priority. “Our forests are vital to our environment, economy, and heritage. This comprehensive approach ensures we safeguard them for future generations,” he stated.
