Cyprus Reports New Heatstroke Death as Heatwave Persists

Cyprus is grappling with the relentless grip of a prolonged heatwave, as authorities announced a new heatstroke death and several additional cases on Monday. The eastern Mediterranean island continues to face soaring temperatures that are taking a toll on residents, both young and old.

According to a spokesman from the state health services, a 67-year-old woman succumbed to heatstroke at a state hospital in Nicosia on Sunday afternoon. Three other women, aged between 25 and 80, are currently receiving treatment at the same facility.

“The situation has worsened in recent days due to the persisting heatwave,” the spokesman stated, expressing concern over the increasing number of heat exhaustion cases. “It is particularly worrying that younger individuals are among the victims.”

The spike in heat-related illnesses has raised alarms about the impact on vulnerable populations, including children and young adults. Health officials are urging the public to take necessary precautions to avoid prolonged exposure to the extreme heat.

Last week, the severity of the situation was underscored when medical authorities urgently transferred a young commando conscript to a hospital in France after he collapsed during military training. Another commando conscript is currently being treated in Cyprus for similar symptoms.

The ongoing heatwave has highlighted the urgent need for increased awareness and preventative measures to safeguard against heat-related illnesses. Authorities are advising citizens to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous activities during peak heat hours, and remain vigilant for symptoms of heat exhaustion and heatstroke.
