The Chongqing Zoo in southwest China is celebrating the birth of a new giant panda cub. The mother, Haoqi, gave birth on June 28 after successfully mating with a male panda at the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda in late February.
A preliminary check indicates the cub is female. At birth, she weighed 185 grams and has been attentively cared for by Haoqi, with assistance from the zoo staff. After more than 20 days of growth, the cub now weighs an impressive 772 grams and is in good health.
This marks Haoqi’s second successful delivery. Born at the Chongqing Zoo in 2013, she previously gave birth to twin cubs—a pigeon pair—in 2021. The zoo has a long history with giant pandas, having begun raising them in the 1960s and successfully breeding cubs since the 1980s. To date, the zoo has welcomed a total of 32 litters of giant pandas.
The arrival of the new cub is a significant milestone for the Chongqing Zoo and contributes to ongoing efforts in giant panda conservation. Visitors to the zoo can look forward to seeing the newest addition to the panda family as she grows and thrives under the diligent care of her mother and the dedicated zoo team.
