China-Kazakhstan Collaboration Yields New Growth in Potato Research

In the heart of Southwest China’s Chongqing Municipality, rows of vibrant green potato seedlings thrive under meticulous care at a state-of-the-art potato biology research institute. This flourishing scene is a testament to the growing agricultural collaboration between China and Kazakhstan.

Professor Vadim Khassanov from the S. Seifullin Kazakh Agrotechnical Research University is a familiar face in the labs of Southwest University. Daily, he meticulously observes and documents the progress of the seedlings, working hand in hand with Chinese faculty and students. Together, they delve into the intricacies of potato variety breeding, aiming for higher yields and disease-resistant strains.

“China is the world’s leading potato producer, and for Kazakhstan, potatoes are a vital food staple,” Professor Khassanov remarked. “Southwest University offers outstanding research teams, solid infrastructure, and cutting-edge facilities dedicated to potato research.”

The collaboration took a significant leap forward in November 2021 with the establishment of the Belt and Road International Innovation Institute for the Potato Industry. Spearheaded by Southwest University in collaboration with the CIP – China Center for Asia Pacific and over ten Belt and Road partner countries, the institute aims to foster innovation and share expertise in potato cultivation and processing.

This joint effort not only strengthens agricultural ties between China and Kazakhstan but also exemplifies the potential of international cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative. By combining resources and knowledge, the two nations strive to enhance food security and promote sustainable agricultural practices across the region.
