Over 300 workers have successfully contained a dangerous seepage at the Qiantuanjian dike in Huarong County, central China’s Hunan Province, according to a local expert cited by Xinhua on Monday.
The emergency repairs were initiated when seepage erosion was detected in the dike, which stretches approximately 14.3 kilometers. The Qiantuanjian dike serves as a critical flood prevention barrier between two significant dikes near Dongting Lake, one of China’s largest freshwater lakes.
Responding swiftly to the potential threat, crews worked tirelessly to reinforce the dike and halt the erosion. Their efforts have stabilized the situation, and the seepage is now reported to be basically under control.
Located along the banks of Dongting Lake, Huarong County is prone to flooding, especially during the rainy season. The integrity of the Qiantuanjian dike is vital for protecting local communities and agricultural lands from floodwaters.
Local authorities emphasized the importance of ongoing vigilance and maintenance of flood control structures to ensure the safety of residents and the stability of the region.
