Chinese Premier Li Qiang Calls for Strengthened Flood Control and Disaster Relief Efforts

Jiujiang, Jiangxi Province — Chinese Premier Li Qiang has underscored the critical need for heightened vigilance and preparedness in flood control and disaster relief efforts across the nation. During a two-day inspection tour in the city of Jiujiang from Monday to Tuesday, Li emphasized the paramount importance of safeguarding people’s lives and property amidst increasingly severe weather conditions.

At a hydrologic station located at the confluence of the Yangtze River and Poyang Lake, Premier Li highlighted the essential role of accurate forecasting and early warning systems in disaster prevention. He called for enhanced interdepartmental collaboration to improve the precision of weather forecasts and to ensure timely dissemination of information to affected communities.

Inspecting the reinforced levees along the Yangtze River, Li reviewed the stockpiles of flood-control materials and engaged with local emergency response personnel. He stressed the necessity of rigorous inspection and maintenance of embankments, especially during harsh weather conditions, and urged for adequate material reserves to respond swiftly to any emergencies.

During his visit to a geological disaster site in Bailu Town, Lushan City, Premier Li expressed concern over the frequent occurrences of landslides and debris flows in the region. He insisted on prioritizing disaster prevention measures and mandated the prompt evacuation of residents from high-risk areas at the first signs of danger.

Chairing a meeting on flood control in Bailu Town, Li noted the increasing frequency of extreme weather events this year. He called for comprehensive efforts to prevent secondary disasters caused by heavy rainfall, to identify and rectify weaknesses in urban flood-control and drainage systems, and to bolster flood prevention measures on agricultural lands.

Premier Li also emphasized the importance of maximizing the effectiveness of water-conservancy projects in flood control. He instructed officials to prepare for extreme situations with adequate precautionary measures and to initiate immediate rescue operations should disasters occur.

“Our commitment to disaster preparedness and response must be unwavering,” Li stated. “We must enhance our capabilities to protect our people and ensure social stability in the face of natural calamities.”
