Deep within the lush forests of central China’s Shennongjia Forestry District, a silent resurgence is underway. The elusive golden snub-nosed monkey, once teetering on the brink of decline, is making a remarkable comeback.
According to the latest survey conducted by the district administration, the population of these rare primates has risen to 1,618—an increase of 147 monkeys since the last survey five years ago. This growth marks a significant milestone in conservation efforts, reflecting the successes of habitat protection and environmental management in the region.
The Shennongjia Forestry District, located in Hubei Province, serves as the easternmost habitat for the golden snub-nosed monkey. Back in 1990, only 501 of these monkeys roamed an area of 164 square kilometers. Over the decades, concerted efforts have expanded their habitat and numbers. By 2005, their population grew to 1,282 within 189 square kilometers, and in 2019, 1,471 monkeys thrived across 354 square kilometers.
