Emergency services in Switzerland are searching for three people missing after violent downpours caused significant floods and landslides in the southwestern region of the country.
On Friday, the Mesolcina Valley in the canton of Grisons experienced intense rainfall, with MeteoSchweiz, the government’s office for weather and climate, reporting 124 millimeters of rain. Remarkably, 63 millimeters fell within just one hour, overwhelming the area’s natural drainage systems.
Rescue operations commenced on Saturday, deploying helicopters, drones, and rescue dogs to locate the missing individuals. The heavy rains led to rapid water accumulation and earth movements, disrupting local communities and infrastructure.
This incident highlights the growing global concern over extreme weather events. While Switzerland faces these challenges, similar patterns have been observed in parts of Asia, where heavy monsoons and unpredictable weather have impacted millions. Such events underscore the importance of international cooperation in disaster preparedness and climate resilience.
Authorities are urging residents and visitors in affected areas to remain vigilant and adhere to safety advisories. The situation remains fluid, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
