Beijing, June 21, 2024 — China’s meteorological authority has issued a yellow alert for rainstorms, forecasting heavy rainfall across several regions of the country from Friday to Saturday.
According to the National Meteorological Center, torrential rains are expected from 8 a.m. Friday to 8 a.m. Saturday in parts of Henan, Hunan, Chongqing, Guizhou, Inner Mongolia, Heilongjiang, and Jilin. Some areas in Hubei, Anhui, Jiangsu, Inner Mongolia, and Jilin are predicted to receive up to 180 millimeters of rainfall.
Short-term heavy downpours may bring hourly precipitation exceeding 80 millimeters in certain locations, accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds. The intensified rainfall raises concerns over potential flooding, landslides, and urban waterlogging in the affected regions.
The meteorological center has urged local governments to prepare for the incoming storms by inspecting and enhancing drainage systems in cities, farmlands, and fishponds. Authorities are also advised to issue timely warnings and take necessary measures to ensure public safety.
China operates a four-tier, color-coded weather warning system to signal the severity of meteorological events. The system ranks alerts as red being the most severe, followed by orange, yellow, and blue. The current yellow alert signifies that significant weather conditions are expected, which may cause disruptions and require precautionary measures.
This weather event underscores the importance of preparedness in the face of natural phenomena, as communities and authorities work together to mitigate risks and ensure the safety of residents.
