China Allocates 916 Million Yuan for Flood and Drought Relief Efforts

China has allocated 916 million yuan (approximately $126 million) to bolster flood control and drought relief efforts across its southern and northern regions, the Ministry of Finance announced on Wednesday.

The funds are earmarked to support provinces and regions grappling with severe weather conditions, including Guangdong, Fujian, Guangxi, Guizhou, Yunnan, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Hunan, and Hubei in the south, as well as Hebei, Shanxi, Jiangsu, Anhui, Shandong, Henan, Shaanxi, and Gansu in the north.

In the southern provinces, 499 million yuan will aid flood control measures, disaster relief, and safety provisions. The northern regions will receive 417 million yuan to enhance water conservation and drought mitigation efforts.

Since June, several provinces in China have initiated or heightened emergency responses due to intense downpours, rising river levels, and severe flooding. Torrential rains have inundated parts of Fujian Province, the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, and Guangdong Province, leading to significant challenges in flood management.

On Wednesday, China’s State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters elevated the emergency response level for flooding in Guangxi from Level IV to Level III. The emergency flood control responses in Guangdong and Fujian remain at Level IV.

To support affected communities, urgent shipments of disaster relief supplies, including emergency kits and tents, have been dispatched. These resources aim to provide comprehensive support for local resettlement and relief efforts, ensuring the well-being of those impacted by the floods.

The financial commitment underscores China’s proactive approach to addressing natural disasters, aiming to mitigate the impact on affected populations and strengthen the resilience of vulnerable regions.
