Heavy Rain in Southeast China Forces 36,000 to Evacuate

Torrential rains have triggered severe flooding in southeast China’s Fujian Province, leading to the evacuation of 36,000 residents, according to the provincial flood control office on Sunday.

Days of relentless downpours have wreaked havoc across many parts of the province, prompting authorities to declare an emergency response to the rainstorms. As of 8 p.m. on Saturday, the latest round of heavy rain had affected approximately 179,800 people and damaged 12,350 hectares of crops, resulting in direct economic losses estimated at 1.61 billion yuan (about $225 million).

Longyan City’s Wuping County has been among the hardest-hit areas. As of 10 a.m. on Monday, four people have been confirmed dead, and two remain missing after multiple landslides caused by continuous rainfall struck the county. The severe weather has also led to the collapse of 378 houses and damaged 880 hectares of crops.

The flooding has not only displaced thousands but also posed significant challenges to local agriculture and infrastructure. Emergency services are actively engaged in rescue and relief efforts, working to relocate affected individuals and assess the full extent of the damage.

Meteorological authorities have warned that heavy rains may continue in certain regions, urging residents and local governments to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions against further flooding and geological disasters.
