Kolkata, India — Cyclone Remal has unleashed a trail of destruction across eastern and northeastern India, claiming at least 32 lives and leaving many injured, according to official reports on Tuesday.
In the state of West Bengal, the death toll has risen to seven as storms and rainfall-induced landslides battered the region in the aftermath of the cyclone. Communities are grappling with the devastation, with homes destroyed and infrastructure severely damaged.
The northeastern states of Mizoram, Assam, Nagaland, and Meghalaya have also been severely impacted. In Mizoram, a tragic incident occurred when a stone quarry collapsed on Tuesday, resulting in the deaths of 17 people. Police reported that seven others are feared to be trapped under the debris as rescue operations continue.
Assam witnessed three fatalities and 17 injuries due to rain-related incidents. The state’s disaster response teams are working tirelessly to provide relief and aid to the affected populations.
In Meghalaya, one person lost their life following a wall collapse in the East Jaintia Hills district. Additionally, four individuals were injured in a landslide as the region contends with heavy rainfall and unstable terrain.
Nagaland reported four deaths and damage to more than 40 houses due to the cyclone’s aftermath, as per local media reports. The state’s authorities are assessing the full extent of the damage while coordinating relief efforts.
The cyclonic storm has brought intense rainfall, strong winds, and triggered landslides, disrupting daily life and displacing numerous families across these regions. Emergency services are mobilized, but challenging weather conditions are hindering rescue and relief operations.
Government Response and Aid Efforts
The Indian government has deployed National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams to the affected areas to assist with search, rescue, and relief operations. Priority is being given to rescuing those trapped and providing immediate medical assistance to the injured.
