The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has issued a warning of above-normal rainfall across the greater part of the Horn of Africa between June and September. According to a climate outlook statement released on Tuesday in Juba, South Sudan, the heavy rains are expected to affect Djibouti, Eritrea, central and northern Ethiopia, western and coastal Kenya, much of Uganda, South Sudan, and Sudan.
The communique was issued at the end of the 67th Greater Horn of Africa Climate Outlook Forum organized by IGAD, an East African bloc. “The rain pattern between June and September will be above normal,” the statement noted, emphasizing the need for preparedness in the affected regions.
The anticipated heavy rainfall could have significant implications for agriculture, infrastructure, and communities across the Horn of Africa. Authorities in the region are urged to take precautionary measures to mitigate potential flooding and related hazards.
