In a significant step towards combating climate change and supporting vulnerable communities, South Sudan on Wednesday launched a five-year United Nations-backed project aimed at enhancing climate resilience and restoring degraded ecosystems.
The project, known as the Watershed Approaches for Climate Resilience in Agro-pastoral Landscapes (WACRESS), is valued at $33 million and seeks to benefit more than 75,000 people across the nation. By focusing on agro-pastoral landscapes, WACRESS aims to restore over 15,000 hectares of land, fostering sustainable agricultural practices and improving livelihoods.
South Sudan, one of the world’s youngest nations, has been disproportionately affected by the impacts of climate change, including erratic rainfall patterns, floods, and droughts that have destabilized food security and displaced communities. The launch of WACRESS signifies a proactive approach to address these challenges by promoting watershed management and community-based interventions.
“This project represents a transformative opportunity for South Sudan to build resilience against climate shocks,” said a representative from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry. “By working closely with local communities, we aim to not only restore ecosystems but also enhance food security and promote sustainable development.”
