Travelers at Guangzhou’s Baiyun International Airport faced significant disruptions on Saturday as severe convective weather swept through the southern Chinese city. Heavy thunderstorms and torrential downpours led to extensive flight delays, affecting thousands of passengers.
According to a statement released by the airport on Sunday, the adverse weather conditions caused voltage fluctuations at a nearby power station. This resulted in a temporary outage of part of Terminal 2’s lighting system. Despite the brief blackout, the airport assured that normal operations were not impacted.
By 11:11 p.m. on Saturday, a total of 70 flights had been delayed by over an hour. In response to the escalating situation, the airport activated a yellow emergency response protocol for large-scale flight delays, mobilizing additional staff and resources to assist affected passengers.
The strong convective weather, characterized by intense thunderstorms and heavy rain, is common in the region during this season. Airport authorities have advised travelers to stay updated on flight schedules and to expect possible further delays due to ongoing weather conditions.
Passengers are encouraged to check with their airlines for the latest information and to allow extra time for their journeys. The airport continues to monitor the weather closely and is committed to ensuring the safety and convenience of all travelers.
