South China’s Beijiang River Faces Second Flood of the Year Amid Heavy Rains

South China’s Beijiang River in the Pearl River basin has experienced its second flood of the year, as heavy rainfall continues to batter the region, the Ministry of Water Resources announced on Saturday evening.

At 8:45 p.m. on Saturday, water flow at the Shijiao hydrological station in Qingyuan City, Guangdong Province, surged to 12,000 cubic meters per second, meeting the ministry’s flood threshold.

Due to the rising waters, the ministry has maintained a level-IV emergency response for flood control and has urged local authorities to implement anti-flood measures to ensure the safety of residents and infrastructure.

This event marks the second flood of the Beijiang River this year, following the first on April 7, which was the earliest recorded since major Chinese rivers began numbering floods in 1998.

The Beijiang River is a significant waterway in the Pearl River basin, playing a crucial role in the ecology and economy of South China. The frequent floods highlight the challenges faced by the region in managing water resources amid changing climatic conditions.

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and have emphasized the importance of preparedness as the rainy season progresses.
