Kenya Introduces New Compensation Scheme for Victims of Wildlife Attacks

Kenyan President William Ruto has launched a groundbreaking compensation program aimed at supporting victims of wildlife attacks. Announced on Friday in Laikipia County, a region renowned for its rich wildlife including elephants, rhinoceros, and buffaloes, the initiative seeks to foster harmonious coexistence between local communities and wildlife.

Under this new scheme, individuals affected by wildlife attacks are entitled to compensation of up to $23,543. The government is also investing in preventive measures such as electric fencing, community advocacy programs, and advanced surveillance technologies to mitigate human-wildlife conflicts.

“We will fast-track compensation for all victims of human-wildlife conflicts as part of our commitment to people-centric wildlife conservation. The compensation will cater for injuries, deaths, damage to crops, and property,” President Ruto stated.

This initiative underscores Kenya’s dedication to wildlife conservation while addressing the challenges faced by communities living near wildlife habitats. By alleviating the financial burdens caused by wildlife encounters, the program aims to improve livelihoods and promote sustainable coexistence.
