UNESCO Names Six Chinese Geoparks as Global Geoparks

On Wednesday, UNESCO’s Executive Board announced the addition of six Chinese sites to its prestigious Global Geoparks network, highlighting the rich geological heritage of the Chinese mainland. Among the newly designated sites is the renowned Mount Changbaishan Geopark, known for its stunning volcanic landscapes and biodiversity.

“UNESCO’s Executive Board has endorsed the addition of 18 sites to the UNESCO Global Geoparks network. This brings the total number of geoparks to 213 in 48 countries,” the Paris-based UN body said in a statement.

The inclusion of these sites underscores China’s commitment to preserving its natural treasures and promoting sustainable tourism. The Global Geoparks network aims to protect geological sites of international significance while fostering public awareness and education about Earth’s history.

Mount Changbaishan Geopark, located in northeastern China, is famed for its picturesque Tianchi Lake and unique flora and fauna. The recognition by UNESCO is expected to boost ecological conservation efforts and attract global visitors eager to explore Asia’s diverse geological wonders.

The other five Chinese geoparks joining the network showcase a variety of geological features, from karst landscapes to fossils, each telling a unique story of the planet’s evolution.

With this addition, China continues to play a significant role in the UNESCO Global Geoparks network, contributing to the shared goal of preserving Earth’s geological heritage for future generations.
