Farmers Across China Embrace Spring Plowing for a Bountiful Harvest

As the warmth of spring spreads across China, farmers from north to south are diligently preparing their fields for the upcoming planting season. From the terraced landscapes of northwest China’s Shaanxi Province to the grain-rich plains of northeast China’s Liaoning Province, agricultural communities are bustling with activity, setting the stage for a bountiful harvest in 2024.

In Langao County, Shaanxi Province, farmers are readying their terraced fields to grow rice on 15,000 mu (about 1,000 hectares) of land. The entire county is making the most of the favorable season, with all preparatory work expected to be completed by the end of April.

Meanwhile, in southwest China’s Chongqing Municipality, over 4,700 agricultural machinery service organizations are operational. Local authorities are assisting farmers in reducing costs and increasing efficiency by providing access to modern machinery and support services.

Liaoning Province, known as part of China’s “grain barn,” is also in the throes of spring plowing. The sowing area for grains is expected to remain stable at over 53.03 million mu (around 3.54 million hectares). According to Li Fugang, director of the Tieling City Agriculture and Rural Affairs Bureau, significant progress has been made in preparing for the planting season.

“Now 80 percent of farm households have obtained seeds, and 70 percent have procured chemical fertilizers,” Li said. “In general, the cost of production input for grain farmers has dropped so far this year. More than 8,000 sets of agricultural machinery in the city have been inspected, repaired, and are ready for spring farming.”

Across the nation, the concerted efforts of farmers and authorities alike reflect China’s commitment to ensuring food security and supporting rural economies. As the seeds are sown, there is a shared optimism for a prosperous harvest season ahead.
