The U.S. Coast Guard announced on Sunday that cleanup efforts have successfully removed an oil sheen off the coast of Huntington Beach, California. An overflight confirmed that no oil sheen was detected after the spill, initially discovered on Friday, was addressed.
Offshore recovery teams collected approximately 322 liters of oil from the ocean before assets were demobilized. Despite the offshore cleanup, shoreline teams continue to find tar balls along the beaches of Huntington Beach. “Shoreline cleanup teams continue to observe tar balls along the beaches in Huntington Beach and will continue to remove them as needed,” the agency stated, noting that about 363 kilograms of oily waste and tar balls have been removed so far.
The oil spill was first spotted on Friday, approximately 4.5 kilometers off the coast near two drilling platforms. An investigation into the cause of the spill is currently underway, with authorities working to determine how the leak occurred.
Beta Offshore, a subsidiary of Amplify Energy Corp, reported a potential spill of produced water from its offshore Platform Elly on Friday in a regulatory filing. The company shut down a pipeline as a precautionary measure but stated that it had no indication that the oil sheen was related to its operations.
The incident has raised concerns about offshore drilling operations and environmental impacts along the California coastline. Local communities and environmental groups are closely monitoring the situation as the investigation progresses.
