Mother-Daughter Bond Blossoms in Guilin’s Rooftop Garden Utopia

In the bustling city of Guilin, known for its stunning karst landscapes and serene rivers, a unique sanctuary flourishes atop an ordinary rooftop. Here, amidst the urban sprawl of south China, Huang Jiawei and her 11-year-old daughter have cultivated more than just a garden—they’ve nurtured a space where nature and family bonds intertwine.

For Huang, the rooftop garden atop her mother’s house is more than a collection of plants; it’s a haven where she and her daughter escape the stresses of daily life. Surrounded by a fragrant utopia of blossoms, they spend hours tending to flowers, herbs, and vines, finding solace and joy in the simple act of nurturing life.

“My daughter and I come here to unwind,” Huang shares with a gentle smile. “Amidst the flowers, we talk about everything—her dreams, her worries. It’s our special place.”

Gardening has become a bridge between mother and daughter, strengthening their connection while teaching valuable lessons about patience, growth, and responsibility. The rooftop oasis also serves as a reminder of their roots and a celebration of the natural beauty that Guilin is famed for.

This heartfelt story is featured in Episode 13 of the series “Oh! My Greens,” where photographer and plant enthusiast Liang Si explores the profound impact of gardening on people’s lives. Through visits to 100 individuals living closely with plants, the series delves into why people garden, how they cultivate their green spaces, and the personal stories blooming behind each garden gate.

In a world that often moves too quickly, the tale of Huang and her daughter offers a poignant reminder of the healing power of nature and the importance of nurturing relationships—both with the earth and with each other.
