Paris Mayor Faces Pushback Over Car-Free Eiffel Tower Plan

Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo is facing significant opposition over her ambitious proposal to create a car-free zone near the city’s iconic Eiffel Tower. The plan aims to transform the bustling area into a continuous garden, enhancing pedestrian access and the overall experience for the millions of visitors who flock to the landmark each year.

Every day, thousands of tourists, including many from Asia, navigate the crowded space across the River Seine at Trocadero to capture the perfect snapshot of the Eiffel Tower. However, the journey is often marred by the challenge of crossing busy intersections and the congested Pont d’Iena bridge.

“After the Olympic Games, there will no longer be cars passing in front of the Eiffel Tower,” Hidalgo stated in an interview with Ouest-France newspaper. She hopes to commence the project following the conclusion of the 2024 Summer Olympics, leveraging the global event’s momentum to reshape the city’s landscape.

The proposal envisions a seamless green space connecting the Eiffel Tower with the Trocadero esplanade, prioritizing pedestrians and reducing vehicular traffic in the heart of Paris. Supporters believe this will not only beautify the area but also enhance safety and accessibility for visitors.
