Farewell to a Rooftop Garden: Liang Si’s Last Days in Beijing’s Hutongs

From the summer of 2020, photographer Liang Si found solace and inspiration in Eddy’s rooftop garden nestled within Beijing’s historic hutongs. Over the years, he witnessed the garden’s transformation, sharing moments like planting galaxy petunias together last autumn.

As midsummer arrived, Liang faced a bittersweet farewell. Planning to move out of the hutongs and leave Beijing, he sought new caretakers for the plants that had accompanied him for five years. Though parting with his beloved garden was difficult, Liang believed that each goodbye paved the way for a hopeful reunion.

Liang’s journey is part of the series ‘Oh! My Greens’, where he explores the profound connections between people and their gardens. Visiting individuals who live amidst greenery, he delves into why they garden, the methods they cherish, and the stories that bloom within their personal oases.

The rooftop garden in Beijing’s hutongs is more than a collection of plants; it’s a testament to urban resilience and the pursuit of beauty in bustling cityscapes. As Liang moves forward, his experiences continue to inspire others to cultivate their own slices of nature, reminding us all of the simple joys that gardens bring to our lives.
