Heatwaves Grip Chile: Extreme Heat Alerts Issued in Six Regions

Chile is experiencing intense heatwaves that have led authorities to issue extreme heat alerts in six regions across the country, including Coquimbo, Valparaiso, and O’Higgins.

On Thursday, the temperature in the capital city of Santiago soared to 37.3 degrees Celsius, marking the third-highest temperature recorded in January since 1912. Meteorological experts predict that these soaring temperatures will persist for at least five consecutive days, an unusual occurrence for Chile.

Local residents are feeling the impact of the heatwave. “It is extremely hot. It wasn’t like this before, and now I find the heat is nearly unbearable,” said Carlos Fredes, a resident of Santiago.

In response to the extreme conditions, many cities have installed drinking fountains in parks and sunshades at bus stations to help people cope. “The sunshades have played a crucial role. We are fortunate that the government has installed drinking fountains, allowing us to wash our faces and hair to cool down,” said Edith Calderon, a ticket inspector at a bus station.

Health officials are urging the public to take precautions. “We call on people to avoid exposure to high temperatures by staying in cool places and seeking shade during the hottest hours between 11:00 and 17:00. It is crucial to stay well hydrated as it helps prevent dehydration,” advised Christian Garcia, head of the epidemiology department of the Chilean Ministry of Health.
