Shenzhen Unveils First Dark Sky Standard to Illuminate Night Tourism

Shenzhen, a bustling metropolis in South China’s Guangdong Province, has taken a significant step towards combating light pollution and promoting astronomical tourism. The city has introduced its first local standard on light environments to establish a dark sky community, marking a pioneering move in the Chinese mainland.

Set to take effect from March, the new standard provides detailed specifications on the quality of the night sky in dark communities, management of light environments, and community management requirements. According to local authorities, this initiative aims to enhance the light environment of dark night communities, create high-quality starry sky and Milky Way landscapes, and stimulate tourism and the night economy.

“The implementation of this standard will not only improve our city’s night sky but also offer residents and visitors an opportunity to experience the beauty of the cosmos,” stated a representative from the Meteorological Bureau of Shenzhen Municipality.

Interest in dark sky conservation and light pollution control has been growing among the public. Last year, Shenzhen established China’s first International Dark Sky Community in Xichong, approximately 60 kilometers from the city’s downtown area. This community has since become a popular destination for residents seeking respite from urban life to enjoy the serene dark sky and breathtaking views of the Milky Way.

The standard was jointly launched by the Meteorological Bureau of Shenzhen Municipality, Shenzhen Astronomical Observatory, and other institutes. It is expected to serve as a model for other regions aiming to balance urban development with environmental conservation.
