Governor Claims Arson Caused Fire in Argentina’s UNESCO National Park

A fire that ravaged approximately 600 hectares of Los Alerces National Park in Argentina was the result of arson, according to Chubut Province Governor Ignacio Torres.

“We have confirmed that the fire originated intentionally,” Torres stated on Sunday after surveying the damage from a flyover of the UNESCO World Heritage site. “Those responsible for starting the fire will have to answer to the courts,” he added, calling for “exemplary measures.”

Earlier, in a radio interview, Governor Torres alleged that the Mapuche Ancestral Resistance (RAM), a marginal indigenous group, was responsible for igniting the blaze. The RAM is known for advocating against logging and asserting land rights over territories they claim were taken by the state in the 19th century.

“The problem is not indigenous people but these criminals who take land under false flags,” Torres remarked. “I think it is time to put a definitive stop to it,” he said, emphasizing the need for action against those he deems responsible.

Los Alerces National Park, renowned for its ancient forests and diverse ecosystems, suffered significant environmental damage due to the fire. Park authorities and local firefighters worked tirelessly to contain the blaze and protect the surrounding communities.

The incident has reignited discussions on land rights, environmental conservation, and the relations between indigenous groups and governmental authorities in Argentina. Investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of the fire and to hold accountable those responsible.

As the park begins the long process of recovery, officials stress the importance of collaboration between all stakeholders to prevent future tragedies and to promote sustainable stewardship of Argentina’s natural heritage.
