China Registers Over 5 Million Ancient and Famous Trees in National Survey

China has recorded over 5.08 million ancient and famous trees in its latest national survey, highlighting the country’s rich botanical heritage. The National Forestry and Grassland Administration announced that the second national survey identified precisely 5,081,900 such trees across the nation.

These ancient and famous trees, prized for their historical, cultural, scientific, and economic value, are considered living symbols of China’s longstanding relationship with nature. Some of these trees have stood for over a millennium, bearing silent witness to the unfolding of history.

In September 2023, China launched a big data platform dedicated to the smart management of these arboreal treasures. The platform has successfully uploaded all the survey data, creating an initial nationwide distribution map of the ancient and famous trees. This technological advancement aims to enhance conservation efforts by providing real-time monitoring and facilitating research.

“The integration of big data technology into the management of ancient and famous trees marks a significant step forward in our conservation efforts,” said an official from the administration. “It allows us to protect our natural heritage more effectively and promotes public awareness of these magnificent trees.”

This initiative reflects China’s commitment to environmental preservation and sustainable development. By combining tradition with innovation, the country seeks to ensure that these ancient trees continue to thrive for generations to come.
