The Roar of Gibbons: Conservation Efforts in Yunnan’s Wuliang Mountains

The western black-crested gibbons, renowned for their distinctive calls, have become emblematic singers in the Wuliang Mountains of southwest China's Yunnan Province. Local village seniors believe that the roar of these gibbons brings mild weather and protects the community from natural disasters.

Forest ranger Xiong Youfu is dedicated to preserving this precious species. He has been teaching his son to recognize and mimic the gibbons' calls, a crucial step in ensuring their protection and the continuity of their unique vocalizations.

The western black-crested gibbon is a critically endangered species in China, with its habitat spanning southwest China's Yunnan Province, Laos, and Vietnam. As China places greater emphasis on animal protection, interest in the gibbon species has surged.
