Guangdong Province, a hub of economic and cultural dynamism in southern China, is currently hosting the first APEC Senior Officials' Meeting (SOM) in Guangzhou from February 1 to 10, 2026. The event, part of the 33rd APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting preparations, coincides with vibrant Lunar New Year and Lantern Festival celebrations across the region.
Local authorities have integrated traditional cultural heritage with modern innovation to mark the occasion. Highlights include lantern installations featuring cutting-edge technology, such as the "APEC Partners" display, which symbolizes cross-regional cooperation and shared development goals. These activities underscore Guangdong’s maritime history and its role as a bridge for international dialogue.
As the SOM sessions near their conclusion on February 10, delegates from APEC member economies are also engaging with community-led cultural programs, offering a glimpse into the province’s efforts to balance economic growth with cultural preservation. Analysts note the meetings could strengthen trade partnerships ahead of November’s APEC Leaders’ Gathering.
