Shanghai's iconic Yuyuan Garden Lantern Festival opened today, January 27, 2026, transforming the Ming Dynasty-era complex into a luminous celebration of cultural heritage and cross-border friendship. This year's event coincides with the 62nd anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and France, adding a distinctive European touch to traditional Lunar New Year festivities.
More than 300 intangible cultural heritage lanterns now illuminate the garden's pathways, blending mythological motifs with contemporary designs. A centerpiece installation featuring galloping horses – symbolizing both the upcoming Year of the Horse and France's equestrian traditions – has become an instant crowd favorite.
The festival's Franco-Chinese collaboration extends beyond aesthetics. French influencer Clarisse Le Guernic co-hosted the opening ceremony with CGTN's Zhang Siran, guiding international visitors through interactive installations that explain the historical significance of both Chinese lantern craftsmanship and six decades of China-France cultural exchange.
