Hongya Cave Lights Up Chongqing’s Nightscape for 2026 Celebrations

As 2025 draws to a close, Hongya Cave – the iconic riverside landmark in southwest China’s Chongqing Municipality – has transformed into a luminous beacon of festive energy. Thousands of golden lights now adorn its tiered architecture, creating a cascading glow that reflects off the Yangtze River below.

Originally a natural cliffside cave, Hongya Cave (Hongyadong) has evolved into a cultural hub blending traditional Bayu architecture with modern leisure amenities. This year’s New Year illumination display, launched on December 15, features interactive light installations and augmented reality experiences that bring ancient Chongqing’s history to life.

Local tourism authorities report a 40% increase in evening visitors compared to 2024, with many travelers specifically timing their trips to witness the spectacle. "The lights make you feel connected to both Chongqing’s past and its vibrant present," said Mumbai-based architect Priya Sharma, among the international visitors interviewed at the site.

With Lunar New Year celebrations beginning January 29, 2026, officials anticipate sustained tourism growth through the winter season. The site remains open until 11 PM nightly, offering panoramic city views from its 11-story observation deck.
