The 7th Hainan Island International Film Festival, co-hosted by China Media Group and the People’s Government of Hainan Province, is currently underway in Sanya until December 9. This year’s edition, themed “From Oceans to the Infinite,” celebrates cinematic artistry while spotlighting Hainan’s cultural heritage through its opening ceremony.
Cultural Roots Meet Global Cinema
The December 3 opening event showcased performances rooted in Hainan’s intangible cultural heritage, including Li ethnic folk songs and Danzhou diaosheng folk music. These traditions were interwoven with cinematic storytelling, creating a tribute to both film history and the island’s open, inclusive identity.
Record Submissions Highlight Global Appeal
The festival received 4,564 film submissions from 119 countries and regions – a new participation record. A 13-member international jury led by Italian film expert Marco Müller will oversee the Golden Coconut Awards, recognizing excellence across competition categories.
