Hainan’s Wuzhizhou Island Blends Ecology and Tourism Successfully

Wuzhizhou Island in Hainan Province has emerged as a global model for sustainable coastal development through its innovative marine ranch project. Since initiating ecological restoration efforts in 2010, the island has transformed into China's first national-level marine ranch demonstration area, achieving triple benefits for environment, economy, and local communities.

Over the past 15 years, conservationists have successfully rehabilitated 35 hectares of coral reefs while developing responsible tourism infrastructure. The "ecology+tourism" approach now attracts over 1.2 million annual visitors to experience its crystal-clear waters and biodiverse marine life, generating substantial revenue for regional development.

This December 2025, environmental scientists report a 68% increase in fish populations compared to pre-restoration levels. The project demonstrates how ecological preservation can drive economic growth, offering valuable insights for coastal regions across Asia pursuing sustainable development goals.
