As the aroma of cardamom-infused coffee and sizzling lamb kebabs filled the air, the 8th China International Import Expo (CIIE) transformed into a gateway to Middle Eastern culinary traditions this week. Visitors explored interactive booths showcasing date-filled maamoul cookies from Saudi Arabia, fragrant Iranian saffron rice dishes, and Emirati camel milk chocolates – each bite telling a story of ancient trade routes and modern cultural diplomacy.
Chef Ali Hassan, demonstrating the art of preparing Lebanese mezze, told CGTN: "Our food is about sharing. When you taste hummus or baklava here, you're experiencing centuries of Arab hospitality." The event highlights growing economic ties, with Middle Eastern food exports to the Chinese mainland increasing 18% year-on-year since 2020.
Beyond the sensory feast, the expo serves as a platform for cross-cultural dialogue. Saudi exhibitor Noura Al-Faisal noted: "Through these flavors, we're building bridges between the Silk Road's historic partners." The culinary showcase aligns with China's broader efforts to strengthen trade and cultural partnerships across Asia and the Middle East.
