Every summer, Qinghai Lake – China's largest saltwater lake – transforms into a stage for one of nature's most remarkable events: the mass migration of naked carp. From June to August, millions of these golden-scaled fish battle strong currents and leap over rocky barriers as they swim upstream to spawn, creating rippling silver waves visible from shore.
Ecological Keystone Species
The naked carp (Gymnocypris przewalskii), found nowhere else on Earth, plays a vital role in maintaining the lake's ecosystem. As the primary food source for over 200 bird species including bar-headed geese and black-necked cranes, their annual journey supports both aquatic and avian life cycles. Local conservationists have installed fish ladders and patrol breeding grounds to protect the species, whose population has rebounded from 2,600 tons in 2002 to over 100,000 tons today.
Balancing Tourism and Conservation
While the migration draws increasing numbers of nature enthusiasts, authorities maintain strict visitor guidelines to minimize human impact. "This isn't just a tourist attraction – it's a lesson in ecological interdependence," explains researcher Li Wei.
