In the aftermath of the magnitude-6.8 earthquake that struck Dingri County in southwest China’s Xizang Autonomous Region on January 7, resettlement and reconstruction efforts are ongoing. Amidst these challenges, a heartwarming scene unfolds in Cuo’ang Village, Quluo Town, where firefighters from the Xizang Forest Firefighting Special Operations Unit are bringing comfort to quake-affected villagers—one meal at a time.
Under the clear blue sky of the Tibetan plateau, the firefighters have swapped their helmets for aprons, setting up makeshift kitchens to prepare hot, nourishing meals for residents who have lost their homes and are navigating the uncertainties of rebuilding their lives.
The scent of freshly cooked food fills the air as villagers gather, sharing stories and offering mutual support. The firefighters’ efforts not only meet a basic need but also uplift spirits and foster a sense of unity within the community.
Reporter Zhao Chenchen, on the frontline, witnessed firsthand the resilience of the villagers and the dedication of the firefighters. She observed how the community comes together in times of crisis, exemplifying solidarity and compassion.
As resettlement progresses, the collaborative efforts of local authorities, rescue teams, and volunteers continue to play a crucial role in the recovery process. The firefighters’ act of cooking for the villagers is a testament to the collective spirit needed to overcome adversity.
While challenges remain, the determined spirit of the people in Dingri County shines through. With ongoing support and reconstruction efforts, the community moves forward, one step—and one meal—at a time.
